Farm and Nutrition Day
On March 22nd, 2013, The University of California Cooperative Extension’s UC CalFresh Nutrition Education Program participated in the 8th annual Farm and Nutrition Day. More than 1,600 third grade students from Fresno County attended this year.
Thanks to many community partners and farmers, students learned about locally grown food and locally raised livestock. They also had the opportunity to taste test locally grown fruits and vegetables. Students planted their very own lettuce plant and experienced hands-on education at over 45 stations. UC CalFresh taught students about “sometimes” and “anytime” foods through an interactive play. “Sometimes” foods are high in fat and sugar and should only be eaten some of the time. “Anytime” foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber and can be eaten anytime.
UC CalFresh offers nutrition education for low-income children and adults. For information on nutrition education resources that may be available to you, please contact Shelby MacNab at smacnab@ucanr.edu or (559)600-7222.
